that growing up in a home with 500 books will propel a child 3.2 years further in their education than a home without books. As part of KOREH L.A.’s mission to ensure that the children of Los Angeles can read and succeed, our Book Initiative works to put more books in the hands of students in a variety of ways.
KOREH L.A. accepts new book donations to distribute to LAUSD elementary school students in need. For more information, check out our guide to hosting a KOREH L.A. book drive.
KOREH L.A. restocks school libraries through individual and corporate contributions. To date, KOREH L.A. has restocked 24 libraries in some of LAUSD’s neediest public schools, 20 of which have been in partnership with Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. KOREH L.A. works in partnership with its individual and corporate sponsors to select a school that fulfills certain criteria, such as the number of books per student and the age of the books in the library. The school also agrees to host KOREH L.A. volunteers. For more information on requesting a library restocking at your school, contact us.
The Bookworms Book Club is way for KOREH L.A. students to receive new books for their own home library. Volunteers work with students and their parents to encourage the student to read outside of their reading sessions. All the students have to do is fill out their Bookworms Club worksheet and have it signed by a parent or guardian to keep track of what they are reading at home. Once they’ve read five books, and the volunteer mails in their completed Bookworms Club worksheet, we send the volunteer a wonderful brand new book for their students to keep and enjoy forever! Any current KOREH L.A. student is eligible to receive free books.
The Bookmark Contest is an annual opportunity to encourage a student’s creativity alongside his or her KOREH L.A. reading partner. Every student who submits a decorated bookmark wins a packet full of prizes, including a brand new book for their home libraries. Everyone is a winner in this contest, so it is a chance to honor and celebrate every student that participates in KOREH L.A. and allows more books to find their way into students’ hands.
