Prospective volunteers must fulfill the following requirements before they are matched with a student:

  • Successfully complete a KOREH L.A. training.
  • Submit two non-familial references.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Complete LAUSD requirements (including submitting a negative TB clearance form and completing LiveScan Fingerprinting!).

Volunteer Reading Partner

Activities and responsibilities

To help foster the love of reading and cultivate the literacy skills of an elementary student by conducting weekly one-on-one reading sessions. The student will be identified by his or her teacher as someone who is reading one or more grade levels below proficiency and who would benefit from weekly one-on-one reading sessions.

Location and schedule

Volunteers are placed in KOREH L.A. partner schools. Site and schedule will be coordinated to reflect school and volunteer location and availability.

Time commitment

Weekly reading sessions for one hour, for the duration or remainder of one academic year. In addition to the reading sessions, some preparation time such as selecting books from outside the school library or sourcing additional learning tools may be required at the volunteer’s discretion. Duration of reading sessions may vary by school, teacher, and student.

Required skills

KOREH L.A. does not require prior teaching experience. Volunteer Reading Partners should be fluent in oral and written English, respectful, patient, punctual and dependable.
